Our local school district gives 2 credits for the AP courses. Do you think I could too? I am looking at all the work I am planning for the AP level courses. For each one, I want to work through the curriculum I plan, in depth, but also work on the AP exam review books. So, for example, we will be doing AP Physics and AP Biology through Apologia. We do not plan to skip any topics or anything in them. We do plan to devote a lot more time to the AP classes than the regular level classes. Think this would be reasonable?

You cannot do AP courses on your own. AP is a business. They have to approve your course or you have to take a course approved by them. If you do that, they you can give two credits. Unless they have changed, Apologia does not have AP courses.

Apologia does have AP courses. And I already checked, you do not have to take the official course in a public school to take the test. You can take the test regardless of course history.

From Apologia Summary: Are our courses college-prep or AP? Article: In general, the first-year courses we offer (Exploring Creation With ...) are not designed to prepare you for the CLEP or AP tests. Nevertheless, we have had several students tell us that after taking the courses, they did pass one of those exams and get credit for the subject. In order to get FULL CLEP or AP preparation, however, you really need two years of a subject. We offer advanced courses which, taken after the first-year course, cover everything in the AP or CLEP syllabus. Thus, if the student takes Exploring Creation with Biology and The Human Body (our advanced biology), the student has covered everything in the AP or CLEP syllabus. Please note that only about 25% of students who take the AP manage to get a 4 or a 5, which is what most universities require to give you credit. Thus, only those students who are REALLY good with the material actually manage to get credit. The only way you can give AP credit is for your kid to pass the AP test. The designation isn't about what you do in the curriculum; it's the result of scoring high on the test.

You can take the test regardless of course history. I do cannot find any AP courses through Apologia and I still don’t think they offer AP courses. The reason I don’t think they do is that I spoke to one of their instructors and believe he told me that they do not offer AP courses for various reasons. AP is a trademark of the College Board. The College Board has certain criteria for what an AP course contains. They have to approve the syllabus for an AP course. A person can take an AP exam and get AP credit for a class, even if they have not taken an AP class, but the student cannot put AP on the transcript to describe the course. It was not an AP course unless the course is approved by AP. However, they can put on their transcript that they passed the AP test and what the score was. In other words, there is a distinction between taking and AP class and in taking an AP exam. They are not the same thing. Apologia may prepare a student for the AP exam, if a student takes more than one of the courses, but preparing for an AP exam does not make it an AP course.

Well in that case, I'm not sure the Apologia curriculum could be listed as AP credit.

I have seen nothing that shows they have changed. I did look into this today since LMKH said they do and have not found anything to back up the idea that they do.

I looked. They call those classes advanced, not ap. Regardless, when you call Apologia, they say you should be ready for the AP test when done. So advanced or ap, doesn't matter, same concept. I think I am just going to list it as 2 credits.

You asked: quote:

If you write AP on the transcript and it isn't an AP course, universities frown upon that and it might mean that your student will not get into college, plus it makes homeschoolers look bad as a group when people do stuff like that.

You can give 2 credits for Biology & Physics. Lab would count as an additional 1/2 or 1.

It seems to me that you could list the subjects as Advanced Biology and Advanced Physics and give 2 credits per subject on the high school transcript, but not indicate that it is an Advanced Placement Course.

Is there a reason you need extra credits? Personally, I would label the course as an honors course and weight up the grade. That lets colleges know that the course was intensive, which you may also support with more information. And, if the student takes the AP test, then you get college credit, which is the big proof of significant learning. But if you attempt the test, get an AP book (library may have it or get it for you) to make sure you've covered all the areas they test. Sometimes they overemphasize some topics. Gail

Because I want to put enough time in to the courses. I am afraid it will look like we did little. So, if we do advanced biology and then only 3-4 other courses, it will look like a very weak course load compared to students from the local schools who are receiving double credit. quote:
