wow, alot of question abbreviated. This is my experience: keeping the land line is psychological because it is grounded and connected to the home. Turning it of meant that my cell phone was somewhere up there in the etherworld. But the land line was costing me way too much. You could get the magic jack but that seems complicated to me and you have to be at your computer and since you have to wait to have your land line ported in, put that off for now. Droids are okay, but they are also complicated. if you are willing to take the time to learn it and will use it frequently, it might be worth the investment. but you may have to sign a two-year contract. I don't know about you, but I cannot committ to a two-year contract. If you have to leave a phone at home, then get a basic one. you sound very confused. God is willing to help you with your telecommunications challenge here. He is in the communication business. Ask for wisdom in this purchase and what would be best for your needs.

Does MagicJack give any signs of being able to import numbers in the future? My land line costs me more, but that is because I have internet ...

Magic Jack has hit or miss phone quality depending on which route the calls go over the internet. I have a landline with Verizon and I am quite happy with it.

Keep in mind that cell phones do not give the address that the person is calling from. If you call 911 from a landline phone, enhanced 911 gives your address to the 911 operator. Even if the caller is unable to say anything and/or hangs up, the police will be summoned to the home. Kids in a panic do not think clearly and may not remember their home address. We once had neighbor kids that had called several local hospitals to see which ER would give the quickest treatment never considering that they had no transportation to any hospital. If you have kids home alone, I would suggest not cutting the landline service but cutting all the extras such as call waiting, caller ID, long distance etc. Basic service should be under $30.

With Magic Jack, you do need to have the computer on in order for the phone to work. If you leave your computer on all the time, that makes it an easy choice. If I did not have cell phone reception in my house, *I* would definitely want something else, particularly for the kids when you are gone. I am very much against 2-year contracts , but if you can stand it--go for it. Have you thought of VOIP? It is cheaper than a landline, and the extra features don't cost more. We have had it for a few years and are very pleased. When the power goes out (snowstorm, storm) you lose your phone, but since we had cordless phones for years, we always lost the phones in power outages, anyway.

We have our internet, television, and phone service bundled with the phone company. Our cell phones are pre-paid. If we loose power we still have our phones for a couple of hours or so. Dee

After looking at Verizon pricing again I doubt I'll go with a droid. Each one on the family plan costs 30$. Cell phone pricing is so confusing. I'll probably wait until Magic Jack ports in land line numbers. By then ds3 & 4 may be in college. We have Sage which is less than AT&T. 10$ of the bill is taxes. It seems that land line prices should be less than they are.

We are keeping our landline for 911-related reasons. Check the phone box where your phone wires come into your home. Usually there is a phone jack outside of your house that you can use to call 911, even when your phone service is turned off.

3capp I agree with your opinion of Verizon. I hate them too. Six months ago, I cancelled my service with them because they would not agree to fix my line in less than 3 weeks. That would mean 3 weeks with no landline phone or internet. They told me I would not have to pay for the time I had no service. They kept adding charges and each month the "final" bill would be different and wrong. I kept calling, they would give us some credits but charge us again for non-existent service. I asked for an accounting of all the charges and credits since the service disruption and they sent me the past 5 bills again. Finally, I insisted on talking to a supervisor who gave me an amount to pay the was close enough that I was willing to pay it. I paid that amount. Then, they sent a refund check of $14. Then, they sent another bill for a higher amount. Good Grief!!!

We have both...a land line and our cell phones, and plan on keeping it that way. We don't give our cell numbers to just anyone, or any business that thinks they need our number. I don't want my cell becoming just another way for sales and customer service to reach me. I don't want to feel like I'm being "tracked down" everytime I leave home. I want to know when my cell rings that it is something important, or a close family member or friend trying to reach me. We have a bundle plan(landline, cell phones and internet), so it's convenient.

we do both. I am not in agreement with 3capp and peace about Verizon, I love their service. In the 5 years i have been with them never a problem that they didn't fix immediately. Before them I had ATT as they were merging with Cingular and back, and had the most horrible experience. Sprint and T mobile don't have good service here. But i would recommend staying with both. You can have a land line for 15 or so a month. G

We just got rid of our land line....got tired of paying for something that I rarely used. Everyone we want to talk to calls us on our cell phones. Practically the only thing that came in on our land line was solicitors and other annoying calls. I figure that if I'm so out of it that I can't speak to 911, I likely will be not be with it enough to find any phone. If I am coherent enough to to speak to 911, I can use my cell and tell them my address. The odds that this will ever happen do not justify continuing to pay the $50/month I have paid for it for the last 20 years.

I have seen pictures of rat brains exposed to normal cell phone radiation levels for an extended periods of time. It kind of reminded me of looking at pictures of lungs of those who smoke cigarettes for a long period of time. Just not a real good idea. If you must use a cell phone, try to use it only on an emergency basis. If you can't do that, use a passive(wired) head set and keep the powered unit away from your head. Cell phone radiation is only get worse (more powerful) as they try to do more stuff with them.

Until ds2 decide which college to attend we will wait on switching to Verizon. It has the best coverage. I need to figure out how much air time dh uses on his blackberry. If he attends the school in Kansas there is no coverage with iwireless. The school is in a dead zone. It is not near interstates which seems to be where his cell phone coverage follows. Dh would be switching from US cellular.

I've only scanned the replies, but one thought immediately popped into mind when I read you leave two sons at home alone: what type of enhanced E-911 does your area have? If an emergency happens, will the emergency responders know where to go if a call comes in and the caller cannot adequately describe the location? Where I live, all landline jacks are in the E-911 database, which links phone number to physical address. If I have an emergency, I can grab a landline handset, dial 911, drop the handset and run. Emergency responders will show up on my doorstep. Check with your cell phone provider, too, in terms of their accuracy in delivering location data to the PSAP (public safety answering point). Talk to whichever local law enforcement runs the PSAP in your area. Will the VOIP provider properly deliver a 911 call to the correct PSAP? There are times when dollars alone should not determine whether or not you give up a landline in favor of wireless only or VOIP (Magic Jack).

Talk to whichever local law enforcement runs the PSAP in your area. This is a good point. Before you get rid of your landline phone, find out what happens when you dial 911. We live near the county line and the cell tower must be in the county because when I use my cell phone to dial 911, I get the county 911 dispatcher and have to be transferred to the city 911 dispatcher. If it's a matter of life and death, I don't want to be wasting precious time getting my call transferred. Of course, we want to think that we never have an emergency when we are home alone and unable to talk but it happens. It could be something as simple as choking or as scary as someone breaking into your home.
