ORIGINAL: anne-girl That sounds like fun! Can I come? If I were going I'd raid my mother's basement for the 70s clothes I know she still has, but that's not an option for everybody. I'd suggest starting with tall black boots, if you've got em. Even if they don't look quite like go-go boots they would be a start (and more comfy than platform heels ). You could either hit a vintage or Salvation Army shop, or try to wear basic stuff that could be mistaken for 70s (eg straight-leg jeans, which they did wear when the bell-bottoms were in the wash) and focus on getting your hair and/or makeup to look all Farrah Fawcett. It seems shimmery blue eyeshadow never went out of style for some reason. No, go-go boots were not in style anymore when Sat. Night Fever was the rage. I was in college during the disco phase. We used to go to a club that had a lit up dance floor just like in the movie. The men wore three piece suits, or just the vest and pants. They left the collar open and a few of the top buttons, as well. They wore two, three, or more necklaces, which they called chains. Guys don't wear necklaces, they wear chains, which are exactly the same thing as necklaces, but don't call them that. We girls wore flow-y dresses. When we shopped, we'd stand in the dressing room and do a little dance in front of the mirror to make sure the dress would move right when we danced. So, pick something floaty with a skirt that is full enough to move. The dresses often had a halter type top, and were often backless. You want some strappy high heels. You want dangling earrings. Wear too much makeup, and maybe some horrible color of nail polish, which should be pearlized.

I'd post the Bee Gees Stayin' Alive video, however their tight pants are a bit too tight.

Hmm, my mother was still wearing her boots into the 80s. However, I think the fashions in Canada were a few years behind. So was the party this weekend? If so, what did you wear?

Saturday Night Fever....DISCO!!!!!!! Wrap-around Danskin dresses with tie belts and semi-high heels (not porn-high, just normal 2" heels). And pantyhose that shimmered. Everything was pretty much a-lined, even skirts cause it was all about the "twirling." Skinny belts were in, too. Clothing was not necessarily "tight" but it did fit well. Short waisted coats were popular and clutch handbags. I didn't wear boots but you did see them a little bit in the clubs. You might find something at a thrift store, we have some vintage ones around here that still sell some of the disco stuff.

I didn't see a date in the op, so I wondered when the party is/was.

Shiny!!! Anything shiny would work! This was fairly typical especially the dress on the far right. This was REALLY popular, too. (the dress and it's SUPER easy to make...really it is. Elastic in the neck and waist) And for men, cause I know you can't wait to see him in this get up.

Ouch! Get that man to button up! Oh, my aching eyeballs! LOL The more I see, the more I realize fashions were a good 2-3 years late in Canada. I clearly remember my mother wearing clothes that were more hippie-ish, and I was born in the mid-70s. I also remember seeing stuff like this in the 80s; I got hand-me-down bellbottoms in '86 that my cousin would have worn in '82. Of course, everybody but me knew they were hopelessly out of date in '86. LOL

I have no suggestions, but I am roaring with laughter clicking on all the links in this thread. What fun!

I dunno... the extremes of the 80s were not a vast improvement IMO (lime green legwarmers, anybody?)

So appropriate that I would be listening to The Best of Abba: The Millenium Collection while reading this thread.... heh, heh! "You can dance; you can jive; having the time of your life; oohoohooh, see that girl, watch that scene - dig it! - the dancing queen!" quote:
ORIGINAL: anne-girl Ouch! Get that man to button up! Oh, my aching eyeballs! LOL I don't know which is worse: the photo or the domain name -- Plaid Stallions?!!!? (Me heareth Spaceballs here. "They've gone to plaid!!" I like the idea of the tea-length knit dress with the blousy top (doink's first two links). Thrift stores might be a goldmine (velvet goldmine?! ) for stuff. If not a dress, then a top + skirt. You might try stores like TJ Maxx, Marshall's, and Ross -- those discount places that have all sorts of stuff -- they sometimes carry styles that are a little more "out there." I think peep-toe slightly stacked heels with a T-strap are the shoes to wear. Unless you just happen to have actual genuine ballroom dance shoes (but then one would still want "street" shoes to wear when not on the dance floor.) If you want to go a different route, Mod Cloth (one of my fave online stores) has stuff like this (these are more subdued -- they're inspired by vintage styles -- could be worn again, since they aren't costumey -- plus, not loud colors): Black and cream dress Navy dress
