I have a physical today with a nurse practitioner. I am thinking of asking her for something that will help me quit smoking. Any suggestions?

There are a couple of meds available now since I quit, but most people I've talked to that use them have experienced some side-effects. So, from just personal experience, I can only recommend nicotine replacement products like gum, lozenges, and patches, but they only delay withdrawal. I'm sure your nurse practitioner can recommend whatever is most suitable to you.

Congratulation for your choice!
We will be praying for you and for your practitioner who will give you the best advice and/or medication to help to quit the habit!
Go for it! The goal is worth it! You can do it ( with the Lord)!

It costs $240 for the inhalers and my insurance won't cover it. I can't use the gum because of dental work.

Insurance coverage makes no sense with things like this. The cost of $240 now for something like an inhaler pales in comparison to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, or emphysema treatment at a later date.

Hi everybody!! Today is my first day of quitting (again). I've tried many times and failed, but I've never asked God for help in the matter. But I'm heading to the beach today after work today with my beautiful wife and daughter for the weekend, so maybe that will give me a little encouragement. I'll keep a watch on this thread and give everyone updates on how I'm doing with it, well, not till Monday anyway, but still. Please pray for me as I go through this valley as I will pray for each and every one of you! God bless!!!

There are a few of us here who have been free of nicotine's control for awhile, so we understand the difficulties of starting the journey to freedom. I'll be praying for you.

There is a lot of information in this thread. Another source mentioned several times is the WhyQuit.com website. Go there, read, and acquire tools to stay quit.

Welcome on board! Scroll back for much good advice. It helped my resolve when wavering.

Thank you, friends. God is good, the damage to the knee was far worse than the surgeon expected, so the timing was perfect. I got home yesterday. No ecigs in the hospital, none since I've been home. No desire. Yesssssss! Nicotine free for almost a week.

The physical therapy is hard, and the pain is moderate/severe. This will pass. The discouragement of temporary limitations, too. But no desire for a real cigarette to "comfort" me! Amazing how God worked this so that I'd be quit for surgery. Thank you, Father!

Thank you for your prayers--they have been heard and answered. :)

People are having good results with Welbutrin, probably now in generic, or with chantix, the drug that blocks the nicotine receptors so that you can smoke till the cows come home but it will no longer affect you.

The ecigs helped me, Pink. Cignot.com has a starter kit for $35. It's very similar to smoking, but w/o the bad effects of smoke. it's vapor.

Quitting cold turkey was the only way I've succeeded. But i had a powerful motivator--fear. And a more powerful ally--God. And the friends on this forum.
You too can do this. Hugs, sweetie.

God bless you! Welcome.
Father, I ask you to give this brother a relatively painless journey to freedom from tobacco/nicotine. Father, you blessed me with a relatively easy road after 40 years--may you similarly bless this man, and pink, too. give both the motivation and the tools that each needs to succeed. Minimize the temptations, and give them access to others who can encourage them along the way. Thank you for their faith.

This is what I felt like doing when I read your post, oh2binva! Praise the Lord you have been a smoke-free winner for almost a week!
Praying that your therapy will help you get stronger and feel less pain.
May it be sooner than later.
We are so proud of you!
Keep quitting!

I can not take Wellbutrin or Chantix because they are both antidepressants. I have been on Wellbutrin (and many other antidepressants) before and it increased the intensity and frequency of my panic attacks. Other antidepressants have made me suicidal, therefore Chantix is pretty much out too.

I've thought about the ecigs. I've heard they want you to use a credit card, which I don't have.

pink, some shopping malls have kiosks with these ecigs. They really did help. Failing that I'd go the gum or lozenge route.

Oh sweetie, I wish I could help you. You seem so overwhelmed. I'd like to see you get your physical self straight, and get prepared for the baby. Perhaps once the baby comes, you will lose all desire to smoke. I pray that's the case.

For me, cold turkey was the only way I've been able to quit successfully. Today is 3 days shy of 2 months. I am by no means out of the woods temptation- wise, but it does get easier. Distraction/substitution in the face of craving is key. redirect that urge.

hugs.

This is great news, Praise The Lord!

It's an eye-opener when you've reached the point that you realize that tobacco offers no real comfort, it only feeds the addiction and makes it stronger.

It's been better for me lately. I'm finding other things to do to get me up and motivated. Still smoking, but I'm down to about 7 a day.

That's great.

Something that helped me was to spend time doing things that I didn't associate with tobacco. For me that was walking and practicing trumpet. It could be anything, gardening or sewing, etc.

Kinda funny, but true;

Last weekend, I had a training program to go to for a church camp. And needless to say; my ability to smoke was severely curtailed. And as we were coming home on Sunday - I had mentioned the fact, that I have proven to myself, that most of my smoking - is done out of boredom, etc as much, if not more than addiction.

I agree that boredom played a large part of my tobacco use, but trying to go 24 hours without any reminded me that nicotine addiction was still in the driver's seat.

I just looked up the bio on my new avatar, actor Denver Pyle. He died of lung cancer on Christmas day in 1997.

Oh amen to the boredom factor! Especially driving.

I am laid up with a knee replacement, and to boot, my friends, I appear to have herniated a lumbar disc during PT or some other alien move made with a non-bendable leg.

I am in fairly significant pain, largely untouched by narcotics. (and my typing stinks, so am grateful for spellcheck) and cannot sit. so i lie down most of the day. Talk about boredom and frustration! BUT NO CIGARETTES. had a few puffs of ecig yesterday, no effect one way or another.

My father will take me to the doctors tomorrow, and i will send home my cigarettes with him to give to my sister. yep, spreading the plague, but can't bear to throw 10 cartons in the trash.

I THANK GOD FOR THIS FREEDOM. Charles you can do it! I smoked 2-3 packs a day for 40 years. Now, I'm only free since 4/9, but it gets easier, I promise.

Thank you Euty for your wisdom and encouragement and for all on this forum.

If you would pray for pain relief for my back, just so I could sit and read or sit to eat, i would be so grateful. thank you.

Father, please give Charles the motivation and will power, and frankly your supernatural power, to quit smoking. He sees the triggers. Please help him, as you have helped me. I know there is no way I could have done this w/o your power, Father. I know this prayer is in your will. Thank you Jesus. p.s. Father, continue to keep me free of temptation too and let me not be complacent and lose vigilance.
