I looked at that, but the best I seen, even with 5Yr CDs is 2.96%. I rather do the 'Dogs of the DOW'. quote:

ORIGINAL: 3cappuccinosmom We are in real-estate rentals. So, it fits with dh's goal of being self-employed, and "free"....we've discovered is that on paper, rental income looks pretty good. But the reality is, the income is not guaranteed We thought we would go the real estate route too and learned exactly what you learned. Although our experiences were good with tenants, the idea of expanding and getting even more "we have no heat" or "something is leaking lots of water" calls was not my idea of "freedom". I also like the idea of becoming a distributor or manufacturers rep for a product I really liked. I hate the idea of "sales" but love to explain things to people and solve problems for them. Not sure what options are open there though... or how I'd even market something I represented. I'm not inclined to attempt the MLM thing. I am in a position where I could travel between shows nationally if a product sold well that way... If it's not clear -I'd like to find income that's not 9-5 and tied to one location. I've already got a 9-5 job that's location independent though and will likely keep it a few more years until I figure out what's next for us.

Lately I have been thinking of chain restaurant franchises. I have worked for some of the larger ones as consultant, but not for the smaller kinds I am interested in. Should have gotten a Subway when getting into it was still lower . . . It is almost as brutal as consulting, or such but not as much brain power. Any experience in those?

PHmosh1, Have you considered busking? My nephew make a good bit of money at it for a while. Look into it, but bear in mind that it might not be legal where you are.

ORIGINAL: PHmosh1 My ultimate goal is to have a career in music. What I need until then is a job that will allow me the time to write and hone my abilities. I'm thinking a "Joe job" to keep me afloat will be the best course of action. Best Buy, here I come! Ideally you'd want to find work that allows you to hone your abilities at the same time. There is no substitute for practice, so busking seems like a good idea in that regard. A busker has to play constantly; the pay is variable depending on where you play and what you play. Check with the local council whether you need a busker's licence though, and how much that'll cost (I live in Australia, don't know if it's different there where you live). Can you get gigs at pubs and bars, or with churches? If it's writing music, I suggest work that involves doing something repetitive and boring. Just a personal bias there - I find ideas come more naturally when you're doing something non-musical and boring, whereas when you have to force yourself to write, it never seems to come easily. Just some suggestions... RF !^) Funny you should mention playing in bars and stuff. My wife and I ate at a local Mexican restaurant a few days ago, and a guy was playing just for background while people ate. I don't know how much he was being paid, but I could definitely do that. I'd have to learn a whole lot more cover songs, but I need to do that anyway. All the worship leaders at my church came together as one band and held a praise night this past Friday. It was really cool to take part in that. I'm praying that something more may come of it. If so, most of you could be hearing our music before too long.

Probably closer to $50 & dinner. Maybe just dinner & tips. When I worked live sound in clubs that size, I got $75/night and free soft drinks. The only way to live off being in a cover band is developing enough of a draw to have a couple hundred people come to see you every night and playing a few nights / week. It would help to get into the corporate & wedding circuit, too, since those shows pay significantly better. -Dan.

My wife and I play at a local Nursing Home once a month, we volunteer, but there are folks that get paid. You will never get rich, but it could provide a steady source of income. We tell jokes and sing and I play guitar, lots of gospel. You would need to make a sample kit, CD maybe DVD and take them to every nursing home and elderly housing director within 50 miles. Keep it at an hour, keep it upbeat, have fun. If you want to hone your skills best place is in front of an appreciative audience.
