Also, was supposed to go meet her teacher wed afternoon. Was sick as a dog and forgot/stood her up. I wrote her a note apologizing, should I do anything else? No that's fine. Teachers are more forgiving than most. They understand sickness. They get it. quote:
Spring conferences are coming up...our form says manda is NOT performing at 'grade expectation' I know she's struggling in math...and frankly, she's one of those kids who likes to 'play dumb' and just not do it..kwim? She's smart, but bores easily and has a lazy streak, just like her momma. She may NOT be performing at "grade level." And that could be chalked up to her making adjustments still. Remind them that she is just 2 weeks into this new setting and she may still be figuring out what's expected of her. Also remind her and them of what you expect of her. DD has to have CLEAR expectations of her and the school needs to be on the same page. What grade again? Now the busyness is getting ready for the regional children's art festival and for our school's fine arts day. I'm going to skip going to school tomorrow, but I'm there Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of next week. Then over the following weeks I'll be helping schedule volunteers, prep materials and organize Fine Art's Day. Bubba's been on his medication for just over 3 weeks now, and has a vet appointment in the morning. blessings, Garsy

She's in 2nd grade. It's barely been 2 weeks, so I know it's got to be attributed to adjustment. When I spoke on the phone with her teacher, she said manda is struggling in math, but manda hates math. She *knows* the skills. I think she would just rather not do it, complain and let someone hold her hand. Is that harsh? Our conference is in a couple of weeks. Might be different by then! thanks for the encouragement!

Potentially very bright children - just extremely "cunning" and manipulative. What they fail to see tho is that parents and teachers are often on to their little game. And until the kids realize that the adults aren't all gullible, they'll try everything to avoid doing what we know they are capable of. I had one second grader trying to convince me they didn't know how to spell the word green this week. I know better as I had this child in an art class the year before and they could spell all the colors by the end of the first semester AND they had reviewed these words at the beginning of the school year AND it was on the wall on the color wheel which is very visible and very large AND it was on a label on their GREEN tote on their table. She knew. She just didn't want to do it. Knowing this child - she's just lazy and manipulative. Taking the dog to the vet this morning. Then I'm going to spend some time at the library while Brian is in class. I wonder if he's talked to his profs about continuing his classes independent study once he goes back to work in a couple of weeks? I have not been sleeping well the last few nights. Well really it's more like I'm having trouble GETTING to sleep in the first place. Don't know what the problem is. Blessings, Garsy

The boys have today off and it's nice. Mid-quarter grades in. Had to explain to the first grader that getting an A- in physical education was not 'bad.' I don't know what it is with his class. He also got 102% for spelling. That cracked me up. I just hope he doesn't get a big head from this year. Evan pulled up all his 'I didn't do my homework' grades into solid Bs. Isaac hasn't had a missing assignment sheet for an entire quarter. And Luke is reading (okay, that has nothing to do with quarter grades but I'm really proud of him since I've been working on helping him mature and focus on tasks.)

Reading really is a big deal. :) Mike had trouble reading because his eyes didn't track the same, and it affected all of his subjects. He learned to focus and it made a big difference not only in his grades but in how he looked at himself.

N was home today with a stomach bug, and R was home with strep throat. This is the third time in less than a month that R is sick. She'll go back to school Wed and Thursday, and then hopefully get all rested up over spring break. She will probably be feeling better tomorrow and will be unhappy about staying home. I"m planning on N going to school tomorrow. He went to Scouts tonight. It is so nice when they are excited and happy to go to school. In Sunday School this week one little boy told us that sometimes he likes getting sick, but he doesn't want to right now. I asked him why he liked getting sick and he said so he could miss school. I wonder what his parents (both school teachers) think of that! He is a first grader. Dee

Thanks Kath. I've heard of those tests, I don't think we take those any more. Maybe they replaced them with MAPS testing. It might have 2 Ps. Such a cute avatar pic Kath! K said they were doing state tests last week. I asked her how they were, and she said it was over what they were learning the past 7 weeks. But of course. K has a missing assignment in one of her classes, she says she handed it in. It was for a foods assignment she made at home, so she's just going to take the signed (by me) recipe in and see if she'll take that. Earlier this nine weeks K said she went in and talked to her about some missing assignments, and the teacher looked and found those for her. That makes me wonder why that keeps happening. Dee

I know how that goes about teachers losing tests/papers/etc. Linz did a make up quiz for when she was out the week, and the teacher lost it. I forgot to ask her what happened after that.

Yeah, I hate that it seems like the only reason they teach certain things is "for the test." Is it important to learn otherwise, or not? And how do we know what the kids really know if they study for seven weeks for the test, how accurate is that? What are they trying to actually test for? Like you said it seems like cheating. What's a kid to do when the teacher looses stuff? Especially something like a quiz or test. If I remember right K said the teacher found 3 or her things that were "lost." Dee

We learned to make copies of all assignments so that if she lost it, we had another to turn in. It's frustrating, that's for sure. She kept folders in boxes and put assignments in the folders. Problem was, she sometimes had students in the wrong box. I was so glad when that year was over.

That would be frustrating debilyn. You'd think she'd eventually figure out something was off. When E was in high school she also learned it was important to keep assignments that were returned at least until you were sure that they'd been entered on the computer. K hasn't had any problems like that, yet. N made it to school today. R is feeling better so she can go tomorrow. Yesterday she said that she didn't like missing so much school because there is a lot of coloring to do when she gets back. N has a band concert tonight. I hope that his black pants aren't too short. I didn't have him try them on recently, so not much we can do about it now. Dee

Encourage your high schooler to join a group or club. Dd is kicking herself for not joining a few when school started and now it's too late. She didn't make the badminton team so she has nothing to do now after school. Oh, she is part of the mural club, but they meet often. Ds has a gymnastics meet tonight. He didn't make the floor team and instead is doing the horse, which I was quite surprised. I thought he'd be better at the floor routines. I'm looking forward to watching him. He modeled his uniform and he looks like a stick in it, but he looked very handsome this morning as they have to wear "church" clothes on meet days. Dh had to show him how to tie a tie. I've never tied one in my life. Is that strange?

Kath, I just hate it when a teacher (or anyone) can't admit they might be wrong, or have missed something. I'm sure seeing her face was pretty funny though! That reminds me of a time I returned library books when my kids were littler. I think I just had E then. They told me I didn't return all the books; I insisted that I had. That was back when I had less kids and remembered that I checked out seven books, and also that I returned 7 books. Or however many. Eventually they called me and told me they'd found the missing book. It was nice of them to call. I'd dropped them off in the main (adult) library bookdrop instead of the children's library bookdrop (which I don't even think I knew about at the time). I think that is why it got lost, but it seems like if the other books got returned properly they all should have been. Fast forward to new management in the children's library. I had a missing book that I had no memory of checking out or ever seeing. (I had 3 kids by this time). I was going to pay for it, but they wrote it off as lost since I said I didn't remember anything about it. Eventually I found it mixed up with our books, and returned it. Dee

Best thing about flashdrives: My kids always have a second copy of any paper or presentation they do. (except for posters, of course.) Come to think of it, teachers don't have students make posters much anymore - except in younger elementary grades. It's pretty much powerpoint now. Even my 3rd grader did a powerpoint this fall. They did it all on school computers during their computer lab time. Library book story: B turned in a library book in middle-school then was told he hadn't turned it in. The librarian was very rude about it when he questioned her. He found it on the library shelf and brought it up to the check-out desk. When the librarian went to check it in a second time, it was already showing it as on the shelf. He said she apologized very nicely then.

Deb I missed your post earlier. I wish K would have gotten involved in more this year in HS. She is a freshman. She decided not to be in band, and she doesn't do sports. There is not a lot to be involved in here, but she could do something. She doesn't go to FCA (Fellowhsip of Christian Athletes). She signed up for Spanish Club and she has missed I think a couple of things they did. I don't think she has done anything with Spanish Club actually. Debilyn, yeah, flash drives are great! Here it seems like a lot of times they can choose what their visual aid is, with a powerpoint being one option, and it would seem to me to often be the best option as you can do so much with powerpoint. K did have to do a poster for English this year; K has mentioned that the teacher has a strong background in art so she thinks that is why she has them do some of the projects they are assigned. Debilyn, what is it with rude librarians? I'm glad there was an apology. Last year N's teacher took the class to the library to check out books. They walked, its only about 2 blocks frm the school. I guess they quit going so the kids had a bunch of books checked out and way overdue. We'd go in and the libary lady wasn't too happy about that book. But it wasn't really N's fault as his teacher took him to the library and the book was at school, and way overdue before I was made aware of it. When I found out I had him bring it home and we returned it. Dee

I know they have probably heard the excuse that the book was already returned, but when if someone is insistent they ought to consider that. And there is no excuse for rudeness.

The day before the big kids art festival in our area and we are so not ready!!!!!!! Sure all the artwork is chosen, all the letters delivered and almost everything is matted. But now we have to figure out how it's all getting displayed on the boards AND how everything will be getting transported! As for late library books - my biggest problem is with our public library usually. If it's a school library book at least they don't charge me fines if my kids claim it's been returned! At the public library I can be positive that somethings been returned and it's actually on the shelves, but until they find it - I get charged for it! Unless I talk to one of 2 people. Nate and Mary are my friends!! They pretty much help me solve all those crazy library issues rather quickly. With the number of books we check out as a family there are times when a book is overdue but when I say a book has been returned, 95% of the time it's been returned! My house isn't THAT big! There's only been a few times in the last 12 years that we've actually had to pay for library books because they truly have been lost or the book itself was mangled beyond repair by either kid or animal. Brian's home! I've got to go! Garsy

Spring break has started! I'm glad; R can benefit from a week of rest. N wanted to go to the library today; I wish he would have checked out more last Friday when we were there. Dee
